Biology Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals Bisphenol A Question
Im studying and need help with a Biology question to help me learn. Read each paragraph and give me your opinion if you agree or disagree with it:Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals: Bisphenol-A I chose to research bisphenol-a (BPA), a very common synthetic compound used in manufacturing polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and in sealants for canned foods. Originally BPA was intended to be used for its estrogenic effects, however the more potent diethylstilbestrol replaced it in clinical use (Mileva, Baker, Konkle, & Bielajew, 2014). Because BPA is a synthetic estrogen it interacts with estrogen receptors in the body and can alter gene-expression. However, BPA does not rely on estrogen receptors alone, having the ability to bind to several other parts of the cell body and nucleus. BPA has been linked to a myriad of health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cancers, liver damage, heart disease, and reproductive disorders. For those who are pregnant, the threat to the developing baby also includes inhibited brain growth. While BPA and its effects are well researched, I am sure there is still more that can be learned from it. I am also a little disappointed that it is still so widely used in manufacturing, especially in food and drink containing products. Some say you are what you eat. The EDC that I researched is bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s (Definition of bisphenol A, (n.d.), Retrieved from Google, Mitchell- The deputy fire chief in charge. He supervises the terminating of the fire. Durgan- Logistics Chief at the Fire Department. Hes in charge of equipment and evacuating the citizens.Goodman- Fire Captain. Responsible for all briefings. Hinkley- Qualified in hazmat and in charge of all hazardous materials. Due to the train hauling ammonia, chlorine and hydrochloric acids his specialties are needed. Edwards- Chief of Police. Coordinating and monitoring all traffic and activities in the surrounding area. Brown- Policy aid. The mayors right hand person. Bauer- The Mayor. Releasing the appropriate announcements for the community and surrounding area. Stevers- Commander of the Police Department. Reviewing all things before being released to assigned sites. Schwoboda- Knowledgeable in how to handle situations such as this. Responsible for evacuating the affected area(s) such as the stadium. The safety of the community and people in the accident is the main priority. Making sure everyone gets out alive is extremely important. Monitoring and defusing the chemicals should be monitored as well. Evacuations are more important. The safety of the public should be handled first and then knowledge regarding the degree of these chemicals and how extreme this could become if mixed.
