Case Study 02

Defining Scope, Quality, Responsibility, and Activity Sequence

You are the director of external affairs for a national not-for-profit medical research center that does research on diseases related to aging. The center s work depends on funding from multiple sources, including the general public, individual estates, and grants from corporations, foundations, and the federal government.

Your department prepares an annual report of the center s accomplishments and financial status for the board of directors. It is mostly text with a few charts and tables, all black and white, with a simple cover. It is voluminous and pretty dry reading. It is inexpensive to produce other than the effort to pull together the content, which requires time to request and expedite information from the center s other departments.

At the last board meeting, the board members suggested the annual report be upscaled into a document that could be used for marketing and promotional purposes. They want you to mail the next annual report to the center s various stakeholders, past donors, and targeted high-potential future donors. The board feels that such a document is needed to get the center in the same league with other large not-for-profit organizations with which it feels it competes for donations and funds. The board feels that the annual report could be used to inform these stakeholders about the advances the center is making in its research efforts and its strong fiscal management for effectively using the funding and donations it receives.

You will need to produce a shorter, simpler, easy-to-read annual report that shows the benefits of the center s research and the impact on people s lives. You will include pictures from various hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities that are using the results of the center s research. You also will include testimonials from patients and families who have benefited from the center s research. The report must be eye-catching. It needs to be multicolor, contain a lot of pictures and easy-to- understand graphics, and be written in a style that can be understood by the average adult potential donor.

This is a significant undertaking for your department, which includes three other staff members. You will have to contract out some of the activities and may have to travel to several medical facilities around the country to take photos and get testimonials. You will also need to put the design, printing, and distribution out to bid to various contractors to submit proposals and prices to you. You estimate that approximately 5 million copies need to be printed and mailed.

It is now April 1. The board asks you to come to its next meeting on May 15 to present a detailed plan, schedule, and budget for how you will complete the project. The board wants the annual report in the mail by November 15, so potential donors will receive it around the holiday season when they may be in a giving mood. The

center s fiscal year ends September 30, and its financial statements should be available by October 15. However, the nonfinancial information for the report can start to be pulled together right after the May 15 board meeting.

Fortunately, you are taking a project management course in the evenings at the local university and see this as an opportunity to apply what you have been learning. You know that this is a big project and that the board has high expectations. You want to be sure you meet their expectations and get them to approve the budget that you will need for this project. However, they will only do that if they are confident that you have a detailed plan for how you will get it all done. You and your staff have six weeks to prepare a plan to present to the board on May 15. If approved, you will have six months, from May 15 to November 15, to implement the plan and complete the project.

Your staff consists of Grace, a marketing specialist; Levi, a writer/editor; and Lakysha, a staff assistant whose hobby is photography (she is going to college part- time in the evenings to earn a degree in photojournalism and has won several local photography contests).

CASE QUESTIONS

You and your team need to prepare a plan to present to the board. You must:

1. Establish the project objective and make a list of your assumptions about the project.

2. Develop a work breakdown structure. 3. Prepare a list of the specific activities that need to be performed to accomplish

the project objective 4. For each activity, assign the person who will be responsible. 5. Create a network diagram that shows the sequence and dependent

relationships of all the activities.

How did you engage with the intervention -what did you do?

Assignment Rationale

The Service Report is designed to replicate the type of task psychology graduates are often asked to perform in a range of employment settings. For example, Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Clinical and Counselling Psychologists frequently undertake such reports to help psychological services make evidence-based decisions about treatments options. Psychology graduates are valued members of such teams, due to their skills in critical evaluation of the literature and ability to apply findings to a particular setting or population.

The coursework aims to test your breadth of knowledge of two interventions (LO2), critical evaluation and literature review skills (LO3), knowledge of clinical applications and limitations of therapies (LO4), and ability to reflect on the cultural context of mind-body therapies (LO5).

Instructions

You are working in an NHS psychological therapies service in an ethnically diverse area of London, however the service has noticed that patients from marginalised ethnic groups are under-represented in the patient numbers. Consultation with local community groups and existing patients suggests that a choice of a mind-body therapy, alongside the standard talking therapy currently offered would be welcomed. You have been asked by your Service Manager to investigate two suitable mind-body therapies and to write a report on these so that the service can determine which therapy to offer to its patients.

You have been asked to 1) describe what the interventions are (as no one in the service has much knowledge of such therapies) 2) explain the ways that the therapies claim to increase wellbeing; 3) review the literature on the two therapies, and to report on their effectiveness; 4) try out at least one of the therapies yourself and 5) provide a final recommendation about which intervention you think should be offered to the patients.

Guidance

To approach this task, you should first choose:

1) One of the following services to imagine that you are working in:

i. A service for young people with eating disorders

ii. A service for adults who have chronic pain

iii. A service for adults experiencing drug and/or alcohol addiction

iv. A service for older adults with common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety

2) The two mind-body therapies that you will write the report on.

3) The one therapy to try out and reflect upon.

Please note: You are unable to use the intervention you presented in the Debate, as one of your interventions for the Service Report. However, you may use interventions that other Debate group members used.

Within your report you should include the following sections, with headings:

· Title: An appropriate title which clearly informs the reader of the interventions discussed and patient group

· Context of Report: A description of the patient group your service works with, including relevant clinical presentations and issues faced by this population.

· Description of Mind-Body Therapies: Introduce what mind-body therapies are and a description of the two therapies you will be discussing. Include an explanation for how the therapies claim to increase health and wellbeing -this may be done through a description of the mechanisms and/or philosophy behind the intervention.

· Effectiveness of Therapies: A critical review of the literature on the effectiveness of each intervention. You can report on studies for general populations and also for your specific patient group, if there are any studies on this. If there are only very few studies, report on this and evaluate why this might be.

· Personal Reflection: Reflect in a personal way on the one of the interventions you have written about and that you have tried out yourself (this does not need to be the one you recommend).

a. How did you engage with the intervention -what did you do?

b. What was the impact of your engagement with the intervention -what changes, if any, did you notice? What did you notice at the level of body, emotions, thoughts, interpersonal relationships, work, study?

c. How accessible was it -How easy was it to do, any challenges?

How might the strength of your preconceptions cause you to reject the attorneys’ attempt to provide a schema for the case?

SCHEMAS
Most everyone has seen criminal trials (both fictitious and real) on TV. You know, then, that the trial starts with opening statements and ends with closing arguments by the prosecution and defense, respectively.
For this Discussion, you will examine the advantages and disadvantages of schemas.
TO PREPARE
Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider the advantages and disadvantages of schema.
Imagine you are a juror. Exactly how do opening statements and closing arguments function as schemas? In particular, what impact would opening statements have on how you, as a juror, would interpret evidence proffered at trial?
BY DAY 3
Post how your preconceptions (i.e., your schema) might supersede the schema (i.e., theory) of the case as presented by attorneys for the state and for the defendant during opening statements. How might the strength of your preconceptions cause you to reject the attorneys’ attempt to provide a schema for the case?
BY DAY 5
Respond to at least one colleague in the following way:
During jury selection, attorneys for the prosecution and defense question prospective jurors to determine who may already have decided the defendant’s guilt or innocence before hearing the attorneys present the case. As an attorney, it is your job to expose and then counter juror preconceptions that may make them resistant to your schema for the case. Your class colleagues have described how their preconceptions might override the schema you, as attorney, would advance during opening statements. Describe the strategy you might use to persuade the resistant juror (i.e., the class colleague you are responding to) to set aside her or his preconceptions and consider what you have to say.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the social psychology theory and research. In addition to the Learning Resources, search the Uni Library and/or Internet for peer-reviewed articles to support your post and responses. Use proper APA format and citations, including those in the Learning Resources.

articulate the freedoms that companies in the United States enjoy given our relatively-free market system

In the first part of your initial post, you will need to introduce the Abercrombie & Fitch lawsuit. In this introduction, you will also need to (1) articulate the freedoms that companies in the United States enjoy given our relatively-free market system and (2) present the Title VII regulations concerning employment discrimination. These will provide the setting for you to be able to examine how the nation’s laws affect the hiring practices of Abercrombie & Fitch and other companies whose hiring policy includes a particular aesthetic for employees.
In the second part of your initial post, present your analysis of this case in a way that identifies which entities (Abercrombie & Fitch as a corporation, the economic system in the USA, the regulatory control of the state, or all of these) have a role in the problem that led to the lawsuit under examination. In your analysis, you must assess the positive or negative effects of the interplay between business activity and one of the following: the free-market system, advertising, hiring regulations, or corporate social responsibility. Your focus must be an ethical analysis of this interplay. Be sure to clearly identify the ethical theory that you are applying in your analysis, and to support your analysis by reliable and/or scholarly sources.
